Prometheus Radio Project organizes for media justice by lobbying Congress, teaching radio workshops and supporting community groups in their pursuit of broadcast opportunities. Hannah Sassaman may or may not be sassing a man in this particular picture. She is testifying about taking back the airwaves in front of the Federal Communications Commission, not even trying to look like a sweetie working the desk at a fine arts library.
Speaking in front of the federal government at hearings, on national television with Bill Moyers or at yet another press conference, Hannah's presence mixes acute focus and subtle theatrics. She's near impossible to disagree with. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, and she commands respect everywhere she goes. Could be 'cause she's fearless.
In 2004, Prometheus took the FCC to federal court, with help from public interest law firm Media Access Project. Hannah and a handful of other Philly-based media activists convinced the federal judges that the FCC's attempts to further deregulate American media were unjustified. More than half a million formal comments were filed in opposition to the FCC, a new record.
When Hannah is speaking, I'm listening. Damn, girl. You know you got it.
